Since September 2009, all of us at Refreshment Systems have been monitoring the progress of villagers in remote areas of Kenya who have received life-changing Energy Efficient stoves as the direct result of our commitment to offsetting our carbon emissions.

The company’s journey to East Africa began when we asked the organisation co2balance to audit our carbon footprint, advise on ways to reduce it to the minimum and then suggest ways in which the unavoidable ‘residue’ could be offset.

RSL is helping to address a huge problem that is prevalent in the Ukunda region of Kenya and elsewhere in the Third World; namely indoor air pollution. In the poorest countries of the world, in which cooking is done on open fires that burn fossil fuels such as dung, wood, agricultural residues and coal, it is estimated that 1.6 million people die each year from the effects of smoke inhalation – that’s one life lost every 20 seconds, due to ‘the killer in the kitchen’.
