What to think about before you order

Instant machines dispense freeze-dried coffee, chocolate and powdered milk from sealed canisters. They are not trying to be bean-to-cup, and the sites that are happiest with them chose them on purpose: they are fast, they are cheap to run, they cope with being ignored for a fortnight, and the drink is the same at 3am as it is at 10am.

Where they win outright is throughput per pound. A busy warehouse breakout room can get through four hundred drinks a day on a machine that costs less per week than a small bean-to-cup, with a clean-down that takes a couple of minutes rather than twenty.

Most sites that run several buildings put instant in the corridors and one bean-to-cup where visitors are received. That combination costs less than fitting bean-to-cup everywhere and disappoints nobody.
