Cans, Bottles & Cold Drinks

Cold drinks are the highest-turnover thing in most vending machines and the easiest to get wrong: a planogram set once and never revisited leaves three columns of something nobody buys and a permanent gap where the popular line was.

Choosing

What to think about before you order

Case sizes here are the vending ones — 24 or 12 — rather than the retail multipacks, because a machine's columns are built around a specific can and bottle diameter. A 500ml bottle that is a millimetre wider than the column expects will jam, and it jams intermittently, which is worse than never working.

The sugar levy has changed what sells. Low and no-sugar lines are now the majority of cold drink sales across the estates we look after, and a machine still stocked to a 2016 planogram is losing revenue to its own layout. Our telemetry reports which columns actually move, which is a better basis for the next order than anybody's recollection.

Storage matters more than with anything else on this list. Cans and bottles are heavy, they need somewhere cool and dry, and a site with no stockroom is better served by more frequent smaller deliveries — which costs nothing extra when we are already on site for the service visit.
